December kicks off with a reconstruction of the legendary Jimmy Webb song, recreated by a group of stellar songwriters into a megaphone for whispered stories of care and sacrifice.
The original Highwaymen song raised the stories of outlaws, fighters, frontiersmen. It was the celebration of American individualism. Highwomen, on the other hand, is a veneration of sacrifice for something greater than one self, awe inspiring storytelling about caretakers.
The rewriting and re-gendering of this legendary anthem is poetic masterpiece by Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires. It is an astute and precise societal commentary, but also emotionally expansive and riveting storytelling.
Vocal performances and interpretations of these short stories are mind blowing. The goosebumps inducing guest performance by Yola, on the barricade scorching tale of women civil rights fighters in the Southern USA, is one of the highlights for me.
